VOX: MP3 & FLAC Music Player App Reviews

Vox is too aggressive

Any app that uses my notification center as a platform for advertising gets one star and a delete. Two minutes after I installed Vox it sent a notification urging me to download its mobile app. I don’t like how Vox tries to take over my media collection. Its two file type options are ‘default all iTunes supported files to Vox’ or ‘default all iTunes nonsupported media files to Vox’. As I use other media players to work with different file types, neither of those options are acceptable, and I’m not willing to hunt through all my file formats to undo the shenanigans Vox wants to do.

Scam Alert

Piece of crap - doesn’t work. Just runs an ad to sell some cloud service. Big scam. BEWARE!

Good to Bad!

A good music player has become an advertising in your face application. I just removed the software and will not install again!

I love it

I have version 2.8.2. I don’t see any ads. I’ve used VOX for over a year now. I got the SoundCloud and Radio add-ons, the radio one costs money but worth it and worth supporting Coppertino. A good reliable simple audio player. Thanks!

At Your Own Risk

Very glitchy. No support.

upgrade killed my external usb sound

“Bug fixes” Could output sound to my Musical Fidelity M1SDac BEFORE the “upgrade” - afterwards, it’s not listed in my sound output. I was watching a video while I did the upgrade - so I’m 100% sure it was the VOX upgrade that killed it. Blech.

NOT recommended

It stops playing randomly. Buggy code. I would really like this app if it worked.

Awesome!

Great app, nice features. Absolutely love it!

best app ever!

the best app! Library, Soundcloud , YouTube playlists , Music Cloud Storage + Equalizer!

My favorite app for a long time!

I like how the Cloud storage is organized and works beetwen Mac and iPhone. I like SoundCloud and iTunes integration.

no repeat or shuffle?

I’m using it on iMac, I couldn’t find the repeat for shuffle button anywhere. I googled about it, and saw some of the images which show the shuffle/repeat on the left side of the play/volume bar. Why can’t I find it, or is it a service only for paid users? I often listen to a song repeatedly, so now I’m about to delete this app.

Not for High Resolution Music

I have a very large collection of FLAC files which are mostly 96Khz 24 bit. A few are higher and some are 44.1Khz 16 bit (CD rips). I have tried a lot of music player software with varying degrees of success. I decided to try VOX as a low cost compact application for a new MacBook Notebook. The MacBook has only a 250GB solid state drive. I keep my music files on an external 2TB USB 3.0 drive. I also use one of three external DAC’s for playback. I have Fiio x3, x5ii and an Audio Engine D1. One would think that the application has only to stream the digital audio to the DAC and the DAC will do all the heavy lifting. This is not necessarily the case. I found with VOX that it somehow colors the sound. With VOX a 96Khz 24bit file sounded like it was comming from a echo chamber. At first, I thought it was the recording itself, but after testing I found that it was VOX that was casuing the coloration. All the VOX settings were the defaults. I liked VOX. Its user interface is simple and direct. It seems to handle hi-res files without choking, but the sound coloration is not acceptable. I am now exerimenting with Decibel. It’s more expensive, but seems to work flawlessly.

Excellent Radio Streaming, Frustrating Sorting ofiTunes Library

I use VOX primarily for streaming radio stations. It sounds noticably better than the alternatives and there have been steady improvements in the library of stations. Also, the support people have been great in adding new stations, when requested. Unfortunately, I’ve found it less useful for accessing my iTunes library since sort functions are limited to "Artist, then album year", "Artist, the album title", and "Album title". Theres no option to "Sort by composer" and thats essential for a lot us and, as far as I can tell, searches by composer name don’t seem to be aware of the composer field.

Does things iTunes doesnt

This is an excellent app and looks nice. It has some very cool features like allowing the use of custom Audio Units which I’ve not seen in any other music playing app on the Mac. For some reason best known to themselves, the developers have chosen to hide this away in an obscure keyboard shortcut. They should add this at least to the prefernces menu. Another nice to have feature would be to make the UI resizable and to have the artwork blended into the background. The major flaw in my opinion is that you can’t manage music by folders, it would be nice if you could just see the tracks as they are in the folders. If you have classical music or opera you don’t want to change the order of tracks from what was on the album or recording.

Great Music player

Love the fact that it reads Flac, ALAC and other codec without a problem. Works well with the media shortcuts on Macbook pro retina.

Confused with Free or Subscription

VOX’s has a nice audio product. I purchased the app for my iPhone for $5.99. I just discovered there is subscription fee of $15.99 a month, I believe it is for LOOP. However, I am not sure if my iTunes account will be charged or not for the App version. I liked the App so I gave the online trail too, this one I did not enter any credit card info so I do not think I will be charge, but plan to cancel my subscription to be safe. This is a good product, I just do not like the pricing structure. I have an email asking about the App fee. I will update this post when I am given a response.

Pretty neato.

I haven’t had a problem. It does what it’s supposed to do.

VOX quit unexpectedly

Loved the previous version ,,, but, this version CRASHES on startup. MAC MINI/2012, Yosemite…. Please fix the problem!

Customer Service

Vox does exactly what it advertises. I downloaded the app and used it for several months to play hi-res audio files through a DAC. This feature performed well. My issue is not with the app itself, it is with the subscription based Loop. The subscription, which is aptly named, is extremely difficult to cancel and requires the customer to leap through several ‘loops’ in order to cancel. This is when I realized, I had in fact not cancelled the subscription through the app, and was required to call customer support for help. The button in the app was non-responsive, even after quitting the app AND restarting the computer. I called customer support and the guy was nice and read the script very well. When I asked how to cancel, he informed me that I would have to speak with the sales team. I am not trying to buy anything, I am trying to cancel the subscription. I asked to be transferred to the sales department, and I was quickly informed the sales department is closed. (I called at 4 PM MST) I had to ask him what hours the sales department was open and what time zone they resided 4 times before he actually told me the real answer. The team is 9 am - 5 pm and they are based in the Ukraine. I would like to provide some prospective, the Ukraine is 9 hours ahead of MST, which means right now (4:30 PM MST) it is 1:30 AM in the Ukraine. How am I, and other users able to receive support when the time zones are almost the exact opposite? Shrug, I am not sure. I am still waiting for the email to help unsubscribe. Quick to take the money, difficult and long time to quit. Very similar to an insurance company, except I don’t even want money back, I just don’t want to give it to them anymore. Vox, it is time to find a replacement for the offshore customer service.

Too many bells and whistles

I hate itunes, i hate this just as much for assuming that i want all the extras. Will someone just please build a simple, beautiful and unobtrusive music player?
