VOX: MP3 & FLAC Music Player App Reviews

Excellent Little Player

While I miss some of the “pro” features from the old beta, this is an excellent, light alternative to iTunes. iTunes is fine, but you don’t want to load that bloated interface just to quickly listen to music (or mixes, in my case). I highly recommend! I’d like to see some FF/Rewind KB shortcuts, please! :)

Wanted something to Play FLAC

Finaly a simple, good looking player to put my FLAC files in.

Excellent Application!

Excellent, beautiful, well-organized, and simple player - has all the functionallity and non of the clutter. Songs sound amazing via EQ. Recently after update it became buggy and crashed but this is fixed! I was so happy to re-install it. Excellent App - keep up the great work! iTunes is so bloated and there are no other MacOS-X simple and functional players!

Distorts audio !

Version 2.0.2 will distort audio, internal equalizer or sound settings will not correct the problem. I uninstalled and reinstalled the old version 0.2.7.1 which works acceptably well…

piece of trash

crashing every second

Good

Overall sound quality trumnps iTunes, however im not a huge fan of the layout. Simplistic yes, but i find there are few options as to how you can sort your songs and find it hard to find songs. Also, it didn’t copy my playlists from iTunes and says i have none.. Overall i think im going to make the switch purely because of the sound quality

Keeps Crashing

Can’t even play anything. Just keeps crashing.

Simply impressive

As a club DJ, I needed something that simply played my music and not organize it into an array of countless files not meant to be seen (I like to sort my own music). So this app seems to do that effectively and so simply that my grandma can understand. The only sorting that this program will do is make playlists either from iTunes or recently played. The difference is that it doesn’t seem to create any new files, these playlists are just links to the original song file, thus making it easy to remove playlists and save space by not having duplicates. (I like to use the playlist option not for saving for later, but as an ‘up next’ list using its drag and drop feature). Pros: Quality matching iTunes in many aspects, doesn’t mess with your music, simple yet effective. Minor Cons: All track name letters are converted to lower case and displayed (Might be different case is imported from iTunes), time selection bar (scrubbing bar?) not always perfectly synced with curser. (off by +/- 5%). For future update: I hope to see a meaningful levels animation rather than a .gif of four bars going up and down beside the track name.

Didn’t anyone learn of Winamp’s mistakes?

I’m going to find an alternative to Vox because this update ruins everything I liked about it.

WHyyyyyyy

You ruined it!! It was such a nice looking and functional player of all formats. It’s now a complete mess.. the UI is unintuitive, there are too many “features” jammed into a small space, and the radio EXTRA that I PAID for doesn’t even work! Terrible update. Completely ruined VOX. I’d rather run MusicBee in a Virtual Machine… K not actually but I did convert all my FLAC to ALAC just to use iTunes instead of this garbage. Very disappointed and I want my money back. Should’ve kept it simple, it used to be nearly perfect!

Loved it until 2.1 came out

I’d tell you all about how 2.1 changed, however it simply doesn’t work on my machine. It crashes Immediately. I contacted support and… well… it’s a black hole. No support. An application that crashes immediately. Completely unusable. It *was* my fav app for OSX, now it’s trash. Don’t bother.

Great little player

I play a lot of flac files so iTunes is useless. This thing can integrate to use the rew/play/ff buttons on the mac keyboard and plays basically everything. The interface on it is also just gorgeous, so clean I love it. The only issue I have found so far is that it seems that sometimes when playing music from the network (not sure if its just limited to smb shares or not) it’ll stop mid playback for a couple of seconds and then go again. This is not a big enough issue that it would impact the rating I give it, it seems to happen very rarely and I will contact the developer about it.

Seems fine. Sounds good.

I first used when it was in its beta stage. Initially it was buggy (expected out of beta) and gave up since i saw no reason to choose it over already working itunes. I downloaded the official version about 3 months ago and found it to be extremely show and crash on me few times. Since release of Itunes 12, i find the interface to be less appealing so idecided to give Vox a final try. I didn’t expect anything much other than visual change. But i was blown away by the sheer difference in the sound quality coming from itunes. The sound seems to be more balanced whereas itunes was more treble biased (i checked if my qualizer was set in such a way but no). I checked by removing all the software audio enhancer to get as much true sound as possible. So far, I am happy to report that the software is stable and the sound quality has improved when coming from ITunes. When looking at the activity monitor, i noticed it to have less load than ITunes in all aspects (from idle to playing the same song with similar settings (i.e. no audio enhancer or equalizer). To make it better: Please add an itunes importer (if it exists i can’t find it). Cleaning up the interface also be better. It has improved but still have to do too many clicks to get the settings i want. I am just a casual listener and not a person who tweeks to get the best out. So if you are a heavy user, result may be different My system: Macbook Pro (non-retina late 2012) running OS X Mavericks 10.9.5 8Gb RAM

Brings back the high end sound we’ve been missing

I wanted to reverse the trend of buying compressed audio tracks and start listening to full sounding music again. The fact that so many epople listen to music through small earbuds while playing back movies through massive speakers drives me nuts. This is my first entry into the HD audio player field so I can’t compare them but I like the simplicity of operation and flexibilty of the VOX player to play different formats. Through good speakers it is very much like the audiofile systems I used in the 70’s and 80’s. The music source I use is ProStudioMasters but there are several more, you don’t have to limit yourself to any one. The interface is simple and small, staying away from using too much screen real estate. Bottom line, VOX is simple to use, good qaulity and gives you back the sound we’ve been missing.

Simply Perfect

This is easily the best FLAC player I’ve tried. It is very simple, has extra features that you can use if you want (ex. SoundCloud integration), and has a great layout.

Great interface, but not so honest app

The app itself is great, with a nice interface, but even though the “Sending annoymous data” option is unchecked, OS X still informs me that the app is trying to send data and asks whether I accpet or not. That is an extremely sleezy thing to do. When the user selects no, don’t try to do it secretly.

Great Player + Soundcloud Integration, BAD UI

This iOS ultra thin nonsense has to come to an end. It’s like an overzealous college design grad made this, trying to be ‘current’. Its clean, and yes looks nice, but I have a massive retina display and your uber small text size, slider and buttons look ridiculous on my big screen!

Having trouble with soundcloud integration

As soon as I try to load the soundcloud tab, the app crashes. I’m happy to send the crash reports.

great design but not working as it should

the app is designed for ease of use. it is great and fits in seamlessly so i don’t even noticeit’s there but i can access everything i need quickly. but it crashes when loading soundcloud and after a few songs i end up having to switch to the browser. if this can be fixed i’d use this app more often.

Crashes every time it opens, can no longer use

Worked fine for playing local files, but when I tried the soundcloud feature it crashed. Now it crashes every time I open it because its stuck on trying the soundcloud feature. Useless.
